So the storms and rain passed and sun returned to
shine on us again. We were back on the
road again heading north – it felt very good.
This time onto Yamba for a short sojourn to catch up with David’s Aunt
and Uncle.
Iluka
Our first full day we spent a very pleasant day at
Iluka which is on the other side of the mouth of the Clarence. We found a lovely walk to a look out of Iluka
beach and near the start was a picnic spot with its own great view.
You can see the mud flowing into the sea from the Clarence
River
The picnic spot was next to 2 beaches and a littoral
rainforest walk (littoral by the way just means by the sea, so this was not one
of our gondwanan rainforests this time).
Being a one way walk (well you could do a return however at over 5 km
neither of our boys was keen) Liam and David drove to the other end and met
Cohen and I near the middle. The
rainforest here is more open and less damp then say Dorrigo or even Mt
Yarrahapinni. It is fascinating exploring
these different pockets of rainforest.
The boys are getting very good at spotting certain aspects in common –
especially the strangler figs which totally intrigue them.
The plan was to return to a beach for an afternoon
swim – but the view from the lookout was confirmed at ground level. The beaches, whilst looking totally gorgeous,
were murky and muddy still. So we opted
to return to the caravan park for an early dinner.
The next day we had a delightful lunch with David’s
relatives and ended up back at their house for a cuppa. They had a small but lovely back yard that
backed onto a park and a children’s playground.
It was lovely to meet these relatives and I suspect we will be returning
to this region (as it is so beautiful) so expect to see them again.
