Opposite Fraser Island on the Cooloola Coast are four teeny
tiny towns and I mean teeny. They are
pretty much all about the recreational fishing.
Poona is one such town. We stayed
for 3 nights at the Poona Caravan Park with the hopes of using it as a base to
show the boys Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach, but to also do some kayaking
between the main land and Fraser Island (maybe even spot a dugong), and for the
boys to do some fishing. Poona Caravan
Park does not have fancy water parks, glamorous camp kitchens etc, but look at
the view we had from our caravan and the edge of the water:
It also hosts a free BBQ on Saturday nights (BYO beverages)
the highlight of which are the Poona Sausages for kids (adults had to make do
with Malaysian Satay yum) – and yes that is a full size dinner plate!
Things didn't quite go to plan for this leg of our trip. Firstly, we did have to use the local medical facilities when Mr C woke up one night complaining of a sore leg. The next morning revealed a more swollen red leg so off we went to nearby Maryborough. We saw a doctor very quickly (and he bulk billed :) ). It was an infected mossie bite, the mossies love Mr C. So armed with creams and antibiotics we returned to Poona (just to let you know Mr C recovered very quickly under this treatment).
We had one sensational day at Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach, but then were treated to gale like winds too strong for kayaking (we couldn't have got off the beach the wind would have blown us back onto the sand) and even too strong for my guys to go fishing. So instead the boys used the caravan park pool and even started practising their snorkelling. There was a bit of interest in their activities from a few of the grey nomads who commented about swimming in such cold water (although the boys were in their wetsuits) and their was one little dog who was totally fascinated and had his nose sticking through the fence watching every splash made.
